Teacher Tips

Got a great tip?  Share it with us!!

This is a grammar review website and here's what I really like about it:
  • Students complete an interest profile so their practice questions are more engaging.
  • Students enroll themselves in the course, which means less work for you.
  • The site was created by an English teacher.
  • It's CCSS aligned.

This site may be helpful if you're looking for something to use as an intervention since topics are organized by categories like commas, subject verb agreement, etc.

My third graders love Class Dojo.  They think it is cool to change their little monster characters and like to see their points for positive behavior!

This is one of my favorite activities for combining the concept of a proportional linear relationship with reviewing how to measure.  Students measure objects in the classroom in centimeters and inches and plot these measurements as ordered pairs on a graph - measurement in inches on the x-axis and measurements in centimeters on y-axis.  Students then determine the slope of the line connecting the ordered pairs and begin to recognize the unit ratio 2.54 cm = 1 in.  The graphed line is also used to estimate measurements other than those taken.

Discussion points for the lesson:
  • why is the relationship linear and proportional
  • what is the relationship between centimeters and inches
  • why does the line between the ordered pairs go through the origin
  • how can we use the graph to estimate other measures
  • why the slope of everyone's graph isn't exactly 2.54
  • why all the points don't appear exactly linear
Pre-requisite skills include:
  • designing a table for organizing/recording measurements
  • drawing/scaling a coordinate graph
  • finding the slope between two points on a graph
  • measuring in centimeters and inches
